The best no-deposit used 4×4’s for families in winter

In the long, cold, winter months we can expect roads filled with treacherous ice. Suddenly our front-wheel-drive cars behave like Bambi on ice and your heart leaps every time you apply the brakes. Maybe you’ve had some close calls too. Perhaps it’s time to start looking at family-friendly 4x4s.

If you drive a family car, you’ll have passengers’ safety to worry about, not just your own, and that makes driving in winter even more stressful. Choose a 4×4 or SUV to take the stress out of driving in the cold months.

When budget is a concern, at Zero Deposit Car Leasing, we know that you’ll want to save as much on monthly payments, but not compromise on the car, and opting for a second-hand car is a great way to find an affordable car. That’s why we’ve dug into our stock list to find you eight high-quality used 4x4s that will serve you faithfully during the harsh British winter and you can get them with no initial payment needed here at Zero. Below is a selection of our favourite used, family-focused 4×4’s:

  1. Nissan Qashqai

First off, the super popular Nissan Qashqai crossover SUV. The relatively humble but willing Qashqai is also available in a responsive 4×4 set up which Nissan calls the Qashqai 4×4-I on the basis that you can leave the Qashqai in 2×2 wheel drive or allow the car to identify road conditions and adjusts the power between the front and rear wheels. It’s a simple and effective solution as the vehicle uses less fuel in 2×2 mode but the 4x4i option is available when you need it. Not all Qashqai’s come with this feature so be sure to specify 4x4i if you need it.

  1. Hyundai ix35 4WD

Next up, the Hyundai ix35 4WD which is not a true 4×4 but uses clever electronics to send up to 50% of its power to the rear wheels when required. It happily tootles along in 2×2 front wheel drive when conditions suit which means that emissions and fuel economy are also reduced. As with the Qashqai, this feature only comes in the higher specs and engine size so it’s best to ensure that the one you are interested in has the 4WD capability.

  1. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Moving onto a family-friendly 4×4 you may be more familiar with, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The Evoque isn’t designed to look like an out and out 4×4, in fact, it’s also available in front-wheel drive but its impressive off-road and in 4×4 guise is a fantastic choice for families that want a modern looking people pleaser in the town but a car that’s more than comfortable on slippery winter country roads. Evoques come in 2×2, permanent 4×4 and with an Active Driveline system that allows front wheel drive when conditions are suitable but lets you switch to 4×4 when the going gets tough.

  1. Volkswagen Touareg

Not only is the Volkswagen Touareg a fantastic all-rounder and family favourite packed with tech and solid German engineering, but it also makes a very capable 4×4 family vehicle when bought in u201c4Motionu201d specification. Make no bones about it, the Touareg is a luxurious SUV which is highly reliable and also benefits from some serious towing capability if this is on your list of nice-to-haves. The new SEL model comes standard with 4Motion and has all of the features you and the family are ever likely to want.

  1. Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 is one of the most popular SUV’s around and one of its main party tricks is that all Q5’s come with all-wheel drive so not only do you get a top class car with Audi pedigree but you also get the in-built safety factor of all-wheel drive and the confidence to navigate a muddy field with all of the family on board this refined midsized SUV. There’s a huge choice of engines so be sure to discuss the best one for you with one of our friendly Hippo account managers.

  1. Jeep Renegade

You get a step up in 4×4 capability with the Jeep Renegade. Models differ of course but the Renegade is available with Active Drive which automatically takes the Renegade in and out of 4×4 mode depending on driving conditions. u00a0Active drive low is also available which affords pure 4×4 capability and means that the Renegade is comfortable in town, on the motorway and also delivers when it comes to all-round 4×4 capability.

  1. Ford Kuga 4×4

The Ford Kuga 4×4 is a good bet for those who want the practicality of a small SUV but also want 4×4 capability and the Ford Kuga is available with all-wheel drive with the 180 PS EcoBoost petrol engine and also with the 2.0-litre Diesel when it has the 178 bhp diesel spec. The Ford Kuga is fast getting a reputation for having everything that pushes and pulls so when it’s married to a 4×4 option it’s a real family pleaser and proves all round peace of mind.

  1. Hyundai Tuscon

Another Hyundai on our list, but that’s because these cars are that good. The Hyundai Tuscon is a great all-round SUV in its own right but it turns into a wolf in sheep’s clothing when you add the fact that it includes on-demand 4×4 where the cars move from their normal state of 2×2 set up to one where it cleverly directs power to the rear wheels to maintain traction. When you consider how much kit comes standard in the Tuscon, it’s a great contender for best family-focused four-wheel-drive of them all.
